European traders started capturing the Indian Subcontinent by the 17th century and through overwhelming military strength , the East India Company took over local kingdoms and established themselves as the dominant force by the 18th century. The British crown assume direct control of India through the Government of India Act 1858. Many civic society emerged in India in the following decades. The Indian National congress party was formed in 1885. The period after world War I was marked by colonial reforms such as the Montage-chelmsford Reforms,but it also witnessed the enactment of Rowlatt Act and calls for self-rule by Indian activists. This led to nationwide non- violence in the form of civil disobedience movement,Non-cooperation movement led by Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi).
During 1930s, the reform was deputize by the British , congress won victories in the resulting election. The next decade with political turmoil ,Indian participation in world War II , an upsurge of Muslim nationalism led by the All- Indian Muslim league. The increasing political tension was capped by INDEPENDENCE in 1947. The triumph was tempered by the bloody partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan.
